Spinoza - Why write a book?
For several years, I have been threatening to write a book about Spinoza, but have not written the first word. Several people have recommended that I write a book on various topics. I believe that people have suggested the book writing based on some occasional great insights that I share. However, the format of this blog is a much better direction to capture some of these insights (at least the ones that I feel comfortable being public about). So, I may go for a twofer - write these posts as a prelude to writing a book. The book about Spinoza will be a practical book that takes the framework of The Ethics and applies it to how to live a happier and healthier life. Modern society (structured in part, possibly, by Spinoza's writings) does not have the same support and healing mechanisms of traditional societies. The decline in health is not simply a function of "fast food" and a hectic schedule. I believe that increased mobility, rapidity of change, increase in stimuli and awareness of divergence all have impact which is underappreciated. Spinoza provides a framework that allows for the processing of change, life's ups and downs and our emotional reactions in a systematic way that brings alignment of the mind and the body without the requirement (or comfort) of myths or ideology. It seems like a work made for our times of unparalleled prosperity coupled with increased anxiety and misery.
